About the artist

The discriminating gaze of Amie Dicke (b. Rotterdam, 1978) reveals associations and resonances that might otherwise go undetected. Whether she’s cutting and altering fashion magazines, blowing up obscure portions from forgotten studio portraits or painstakingly covering books with layers of powdered make-up, Amie Dicke’s practice is characterized by judicious deletion, selection and removal. Her work has appeared in institutions including Tate Modern in London and Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt. Currently based in Amsterdam, she found her approach while still a student at the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam when she used marzipan and icing to cast the negative space between her legs – rendering herself at once visible and invisible. With How sweet is the space between my legs, Amie Dicke signaled her profound and enduring interest in presence and absence, solids and voids.

Amie Dicke rose to prominence in the early 2000s after a period of living and working in New York City that saw her literally de-facing the advertising imagery of Madison Avenue, obscuring the features of famous models and driving nails through glossy publications – some of which subsequently commissioned Dicke to contribute to their pages. Recently, the familiar body language of blue-suited politicians seen in the news media is infinitely evocative when enlarged and selectively sandpapered by Dicke for Political Horizon, 2017. Ironically, it’s her imposition of anonymity that allows images to meet and merge somewhere between – and beyond – the confident dualities offered to us by our aesthetic culture. As she lures shapes from the margins and distills visual poetry from detail, she creates for us multiple ways to enter a space that is rich with meaning and possibilities.
