About the artist

Hajime Sorayama (b. 1947) lives and works in Japan. Sorayama attended Shikoku Gakuin University, but left to attend the Chuo Art School from where he graduated in 1968. He then took a job as an illustrator for an advertising agency for four years before working independently as a freelance illustrator. In 1978, he created his first 'robot' and from that time has been in numerous books with his illustrations including Sexy Robot (1983); Pin Up (1984); Hyper Illustrations (1989); Naga Deluxe (1997); and The Gynoids Genetically Manipulated (2000). Respected as a founder of airbrush technique, Sorayama’s hyper-realistic artful depictions of sensual metallic qualities of robots are firmly established in his reputation. “In pursuit of hyper-realism, I use the airbrush in a way that naturally depicts minute details of human skin, lips, eyeballs, hair, even individual body hair, or the feel of leather or silk clothes, the metallicity of the robot, the reflection of light.”

His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.

When Sorayama and Case Studyo collide, exquisite mastery is forged. With this edition the Japanese master revisits his 2018 collaboration ‘A Touch Of Mercury’, using the most precious of metals to deliver a raw and powerful statement. ‘The Midas Touch’ not only explores the relationship between artist and audience, but also delves into the intimate and complicated relationship of creator and creation. The sculpture’s obscene gesture constitutes a small revolt and playfully touches on the fear of an inevitable clash between man and machine. Sorayama’s sexy robot seems to have turned against its creator and reminds us all that technology can be tantalizingly beautiful but also ruthlessly cold.
